Walter C. “Wally” Winchel of Janesville, passed away on December 8, 2025, at Mercy Hospital. He was born on June 29, 1936, in Ontario, Wis., the son of Wesley and Grace (Thomas) Winchel. He grew up in the Ontario area where he graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
After moving to Janesville, Wally went to work at General Motors where he was employed for 40 years prior to retiring. He was a member of U.A.W Local # 95. On September 12, 1975, he married Meredith Knauss. Wally enjoyed working around his home fixing cars and doing carpentry work. He also enjoyed hunting with his son, Brian. Wally attended Foundation Bible Church.
Wally is survived by his wife, Meredith Winchel; children, Amy (Karl) Allen, Jeff (Erika) Winchel, Brian (Jennifer) Winchel, Vernon (Ilse) Engstrom, and Kimberly (Tim) Williamson; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Glenn Winchel and Carl Winchel; and sister, Linda Lewis.
A memorial service will be held at FOUNDATION BIBLE CHURCH, 1805 Foster Avenue, Janesville, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2025. Pastor Dan Wolf will officiate. The family will meet friends in the church fellowship hall following the services for a time of fellowship and refreshments.
