Virginia H. Nitz

Virginia Nitz, a Janesville native, devoted educator and extraordinary musician, passed away at age 89 on October 23, 2026.

Virginia grew up surrounded by music. Her father played fiddle and her mother, the piano, so music was naturally part of her life. At six years old, she began piano and later took violin lessons, beginning a lifelong passion that would eventually become her greatest gift to others. Virginia played violin at Janesville Senior High School where she met and eventually married her high school sweetheart, David Nitz. She Graduated from UW Whitewater and began a teaching career.

After welcoming two daughters, she balanced family life with her dedication to music as an organist and pianist. She was the organist for First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, a member of the MacDowell Music Club and Fine Arts Club, and entertained folks at various area restaurants, including Shakey’s Pizza.

Virginia had a remarkable ability to play music by ear. She could transpose songs into any key as she accompanied many singers and musicians for numerous events, including her daughters, Sheila and Carla, who both played violin.

Her dedication and contributions were recognized, among which was the YWCA Rock County Women of Distinction Award.

Virginia was preceded in death by her father, Chris Carlson; her mother, Helen (Scott) Carlson; her brother, Walter Carlson; and her beloved husband, David Nitz. She is survived by her daughters, Sheila Nitz and Carla Nitz-Gamper (Steven); her sister, Christine Carlson/Welcenbach; grandchildren, Daniel DeVoe (April), Michael Nitz, Jake Gamper (Brittany), and Alexandra Gamper; and her great-grandchildren, Zeke and Adellynn DeVoe.

Virginia lived a life enriched by music, education, family, and service to others. Her remarkable talents and musical gifts touched countless people throughout Wisconsin and beyond.
