Richard Carl Stark

January 28, 1938 — June 7, 2025

Richard C. Stark of Janesville passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on June 7, 2025, following a long and courageous battle with cardiovascular dementia. He was born on January 28, 1938, the son of Reynold and Dorothy (Woods) Stark. A vibrant and active man all of his life, Richard was known for savoring the simple pleasures, like a glass of wine and a good burger at My Apartment, or a quiet ride through the park-even in the final weeks before his hospitalization.

Often introducing himself with a warm smile as "Richard the Great”, he truly lived up to the name in the hearts of those who knew him. Richard was a man of strength and kindness, deeply rooted in compassion and goodwill. Even as illness clouded his memory, he never lost his instinct to offer a friendly word, a thank you, or gentle smile to those around him.

Richard's hardworking spirit showed early, beginning with his first job at Power & Light, and continuing with a lifelong career at General Motors. He joined GM at 18 years old and rose through the ranks to lead the plant's security and fire protection services as the Fire Marshal. After 35 years of dedicated service, he retired in 1992 to lovingly care for his beloved wife, Jacqueline, throughout her 15-year battle with cancer.

He had a deep love for the outdoors, boating and especially tending his yard and gardens. Richard found true joy volunteering at Rotary Gardens, where he became affectionately known as one of the "Grumpies”. He was a proud and active member of First Lutheran Church, where he served faithfully as usher captain and brightened many coffee hour gatherings with his quick wit.

Above all, Richard loved his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. His happiest memories included travel with Jacqueline, particularly their cherished trips to Hawaii, or simply cruising in one of his treasured Cadillacs. A lifelong GM enthusiast, he never missed a chance to take a drive.

Richard is survived by his children: Richard (Stacie) Stark of Saukville, WI; Connie (Glen) Gregerson of Janesville, WI; and CeeCee (Don) Handrow of Janesville, WI. He also leaves behind four grandchildren: Nicholas Gregerson and Mary Gregerson of Evansville, WI; Rachel (Tyler) Zaruba of Marion, IA; and Madeline (Cameron) Wright of McFarland, WI. He was a proud great-grandfather to Wren and Winona Zaruba, and Cameron (Mac) Wright Jr. Richard is also survived by his sister, Sandra (Richard) Hynes of Cambridge, WI.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jacqueline O. (Gramke) Stark, and his parents, Dorothy and Reynold Stark.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the many caregivers and to My Apartment Restaurant. Their kindness made a lasting difference. A very special thank you to Jodi Tremain, who became like a third daughter to Richard in his final year. And to "our" incredible crew at My Apartment, thank you for the unwavering love and support you showed Dad during these past five plus years.

Richard's legacy of love, humor, strength, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Truly, he was and always will be Richard the Great.

Memorials can be made to Rotary Botanical Gardens, or to Agrace Hospice Care.
