Dr. Philip Selgren, 95, passed away at Cedar Crest on December 10, 2025. Phil was born July 22, 1930 in Janesville to Dr. Clarence Selgren and Myrtle (Morton) Selgren. He attended St. Olaf College and Marquette University School of Dentistry. Phil married Faith Olson on June 26, 1954. Phil served for two years as a Lieutenant in the Navy, providing dental services at Camp Pendleton, CA.
Phil loved his hometown and came right back to Janesville where he joined his father's dental practice and lived the rest of his life. A man of faith and service, Phil gave generously of his time to numerous organizations. He was very active in the Kiwanis Club and Y's Men, served on the Janesville board of education, sang in his church choir, and spent countless weekends leading his Boy Scout troops on camping and hiking adventures. His leadership and love of the outdoors inspired generations of young scouts.
Throughout his life, Phil received many public service awards in recognition of his dedication to community service. He was recognized in 1965 as young man of the year by the Janesville Jaycees. Above all, he was a steadfast father who taught his family the true meaning of strength, honesty and independence. His strong character will be remembered with deep admiration by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Phil is survived by his daughters, Stacey (Don) McCann of Janesville, Susan Selgren of Boston, MA, Sandra (John) Bruhn of Winchester, WI, Sara O'Neill of Killarney, Ireland; their mother Faith (Olson) Selgren; grandchildren, Ryan (Alia) McCann, Erin McCann, Laurel and Julia O'Neill; great grandchildren, Connor and Charlie McCann; stepchildren, Craig (Connie) Merrick of Kaukauna, WI, their three children and nine grandchildren, Karen (Reg) Videgar of Three Lakes, WI, their two daughters and five grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Bruce, Brian and Linda Johnson, Jeff Selgren, Shelly (Keith) Rowden; sister-in-law Gloria Selgren, brother-in-law Nelson (Bonnie) Mowry. He was preceded in death by his dear wife Norma (Merrick) Selgren, parents Clarence and Myrtle (Morton) Selgren, siblings Doris Ann Selgren, Ralph Selgren, Margaret Johnson, and nephew Scott Selgren.
Visitation will be held at FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH on Friday, December 19, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Family and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Scouting America or plant a tree in his memory.
